At approximately 8:00 pm local time, multiple gunmen opened fire at six locations across central Vienna, Austria. At least 15 people have been injured, including one police officer, and one civilian has been killed. One of the gunmen has been killed by police and was reportedly wearing an explosive belt and was carrying a bag filled with ammunition. Military units have been deployed throughout the city to guard key areas while police track down the other gunmen. The situation is ongoing and government officials have urged the public to remain indoors and avoid public areas.
The shootings began just hours before a nationwide lockdown to combat a surge in Covid-19 cases went into effect. The gunmen appear to have taken advantage of the crowds eating outside before the shutdown began. The first shots occurred near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue, but the motive remains unknown at this time.
